Raku pottery is a dramatic low-fire ceramic technique originating in 16th century Japan. The process involves pulling glowing hot pottery from a kiln and plunging it into a pail of combustable materials ( like sawdust or newspaper) which then bursts into flame from the heat. Shortly after the inferno flares, the pail is covered with a fitted lid which quickly smothers the fire resulting in a lot of sooty smoke. The rapid cooling from the kiln to the pail creates distinct crackle patterns in the glazes that absorbs the dark soot, resulting in the classic raku look. Many pieces don’t survive the thermal shock of raku firing, so every piece of raku for sale is a survivor!

Artist Statement: This is a special piece for me to part with. It was my very first (successful) raku fired work of art, and I gave it to my mother in 1985 as a gift. Sadly, I got it back in 2019 when Mom no longer needed things of this world, and I’ve finally decided it’s time for this little duck box to find a new home. Maybe yours?
