Artist Statement: I was inspired to create ‘I Dream of Africa’ while on my first safari in Botswana where our guide told us about the relationship between predators and their preferred prey. He told us when looking for the elusive cheetah, follow the ubiquitous herds of impala for that is where you will find the cheetah in wait. Impala are the cheetah’s favorite prey, so the cheetah follows them like a ghost, awaiting its perfect moment for ambush. These two species in this eternal dance of shadow and challenge so permeated my dreams that I imagined myself into the trio, resulting in this sculpture.
